Pediatric intensive care unit
Project Category: Navigation Design
Year: 2022
Problem: The pediatric intensive care unit of the "Institute of Pediatrics, Obstetrics and Gynecology of NAMS of Ukraine" underwent renovation in 2022. It required a navigation system that not only aligned with the serious healthcare theme but also instilled a sense of hope and cheer in the children and parents receiving care in this unit.
Additionally, the navigation system had to be versatile for different types of walls and doors — white, wooden, semi-transparent, etc. The design had to consider these factors to ensure each label was clearly visible and readable on every surface.
Solution: I designed room labels that were minimalistic and clear, yet incorporated cheerful, colored icons. These icons, which appeared like mascots, breathed additional life into the vibrant interior. Later, when the project manager visited the unit, she noted that the doctors, nurses, and patients all expressed enjoyment of the labels, referencing them with warmth and smiles.
As for the label material that needed to match different surfaces, I suggested using white plexiglass labels, slightly elevated from the wall with metallic rivets. This way, the labels blended seamlessly with all surfaces and the overall interior design.
